A style-struck pair, Ms. Bello, a writer, and Mr. DePaolis, who has worked for Banana Republic, might have been haunting some Manhattan citadel of chic — Jeffrey in the meatpacking district or Barneys on Madison Avenue. In fact they were in Chelsea, spelunking for treasures at the Goodwill store on West 25th Street.

The 5,500-square-foot thrift outlet is a laboratory of sorts for Goodwill and its 2,200 stores around the country. Intent on sprucing up an image that conjures low-end castoffs and no-frills ambience, many Goodwill stores are courting the shoppers who scour high-end resale shops and department store sales racks for bargains.

“We are making a particularly strong push right now to improve our image, our reputation and our brand, to promote Goodwill as a cool place to shop,” said Jim Gibbons, the chief executive for Goodwill Industries International in Rockville, Md.

Esperanza Spalding's life isn't a typical narrative. She's a Welsh, Black, Native-American and Hispanic native of Portand, Oregon. A gifted bassist, she dropped out of school at 16 and got her GED. After a spending some time in a local university, she got accepted to the Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship. At Berklee, she became a fast favorite and was asked to tour with Patti Austin after her first year. Though she spent some time teaching at her alma mater, she's now a focusing on her career fulltime.

If her music were a color it would be baby blue. Calm and melodious. The soothing sounds float around and send you flying. We love her hair!

An open discussion will be held with the exhibiting photographers of “underEXPOSED: Black Women Photographers in America” at 2p, Sunday, February 17, 2008 at New York’s Lincoln Center. Admission is free.

The show is a traveling photography exhibit and will run through the month of February 2008 in the Freida & Roy Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater at Lincoln Center, 70 Lincoln Center Plaza, 2nd floor, (between Broadway & Amsterdam Ave.) New York City. The curator for the show is Ton`ya Leigh, a New York City-based Art Director and photographer.

This exhibition showcases the work of African-American women photographers. The participating photographers in this show are all based in the New York City area but hail from places such as California and Haiti. The exhibiting photographers are as
follows: Patrina Hall-Madry, Deborah Terry, June Truesdale, Sheila SL Dawkins, Ton’ya Leigh, Michaelle Chapoteau, Noreen Mallory and Carucha L. Meuse. The works from these photographers range from travel and nature photography to portrait and photojournalism.

Create The Perfect Smoky Eye

I remember when the smoky eye first became all the rage a few years ago. I kind of thought that it would be fleeting makeup trend like dark lip liner (Oh the 90s). But now it seems that the it has become the go-to makeup look for evening. I've been experimenting with makeup since I was in elementary school, so I consider myself to be generally pretty adept at application, but I have yet to achieve the perfect smoky eye. Fortunately, I think I found some pretty good instructions.
Now, with a simple youtube search you'll discover that there are about a dozen smoky eye tutorials; however, this is one of the few that featured a model of color.

You'll need:

3 eyeshadows: 1 light, 1 medium, 1 dark preferably with a gold base. Gold undertones work best on dark skin

1 Mascara: I'm currently in love with CoverGirl LashExact Mascara ($7.49)

or if you're an economizer, Sephora has compiled all the essentials into a single package. I'm not so sure about the quality of the products, though.

All you makeup heads might remember the fury that surrounded Chanel's last must-have nail color, black satin. Fashionista's (including yours truly) dutifully placed their names on month-long waiting lists for the elusive varnish. (in case you're still interested you can now buy it here)

Now, there's a new nail polish superstar on the horizon: Chanel's Blue Satin. It's pretty much sold out on the designer's official website, but the ultra-determined (like me) can find it on ebay. I can't really account for the intensity of the color (i.e. work appropriateness), but guess we shall soon see, or if you have the shade and you care to comment. Feel free.

Mark Your Calendars...A Raisin In The Sun Comes To TV

A Raisin In The Sun starring Phylicia Rashaad, Sanaa Lathan, Sean Combs, and Audra McDonald is cominig to television. The Tony Award Winning Play is scheduled to air on ABC Monday, February 25th.

For those who aren't quite up on the history. A Raisin In The Sun was the first play by an black woman to be performed on Broadway, and it was revived with the aforementioned cast in 2004 earning Ms. Rashad a Tony for her performance.

Take a peek at the trailer. This adaptation looks like it's going to be pretty good. Even Diddy's effort appears to be pretty respectable.

* A mother of a beautiful 1 year old little girl, I am a total girlie-girl and a sucker for a SALE sign. Bright colors make me happy, and I love to stand out in a crowd. I love to try new products and styles. I love shoes. If I ever get married, my husband's wedding vows will contain "I promise to buy you shoes." No matter what size pants I wear, shoes always fit. I love to get a good deal, and RARELY pay full price for anything. Shopping is a total release for me, and is better than therapy IMO. I think every woman needs 3 mirrors in her life; a full-length mirror to see your enitre outfit before you leave the house, a handheld mirror you can take to a source of natural light to check your makeup, and a loving friend who will always be honest about how you look. For me, that's my mom...

* Nivea Soft body cream (I use it as a facial moisturizer)
* Nivea Kiss of Soft lip balm
* Benefit Dandelion powder
* CoverGirl Lash Blast Mascara in Very Black
* Avon Ideal Shade Cream to Powder Foundation w/ SPF in Soft Honey
* tweezers and a disposable razor (stray hairs and unruly brows are the worst!)

This is just the bare bones, my daily face, if you will....I have two Rubbermaid desk organizers with other random cosmetics I use...

* Classic with a kick. I like well-made classic pieces; white french-cuff shirts, wide leg black trousers, cardigans...but then I like to add a little bit of me...BIG jewelry, sparkle, bright colors and amazing shoes...enough to stand out, but not so much that I look like I'm going to a costume party....
